MAP Alert: Toronto Sun op-ed portrays pro-Palestine demonstrator carrying smoke canisters as a "suicide-bomber"

The obvious cases of racism in this article cross the line, even as an opinion article. Please draft an email addressed to Warmington and the editor at Toronto Sun telling them that this kind of anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab reporting is deplorable.

This article claims that a protestor wearing a belt to hold colored smoke canisters (the same kind used for gender reveal parties) was wearing a “replica suicide vest.” The obvious cases of racism in this article cross the line, even as an opinion article. Please draft an email addressed to Lilley and the editor at Toronto Sun telling them that this kind of anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab reporting is deplorable.

  • Most pressingly, the article contains several examples of anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism. The fact that far-right journalists are claiming that a protestor wearing a keffiyeh and a utility belt for colorful smoke canisters is sporting a “replica suicide vest” only demonstrates their racism and their tendency to associate Palestinians, Arabs, or pro-Palestine protestors with terrorism. The protestor is very clearly wearing a utility belt to hold colorful smoke canisters often used at protests. The idea that this resembles a suicide vest is a fabrication fueled by his racist prejudgments.
  • Lilley falsely asserts that the pro-Palestine call of “from the river to the sea, Palestine is almost free” is “nothing short of calls for genocide…” and repeatedly refers to demonstrators as a “Hamas supporting mob” and “pro-Hamas.”
  • Labeling an article as “opinion” does not permit journalists to spread their racist, bigoted opinions. The disparagement of others based on their ethnicity, birthplace, and religion goes beyond engaging in a “good-faith debate” and toes on hate speech.
  • The Canadian pro-Palestine Protestor Ahmad Jarrar, who has been falsely accused of wearing a "replica suicide vest," has been subjected to unjust, racist accusations, defamation, and even threats. These types of articles published by the Toronto Sun are a direct threat to his safety and well-being.
