Comments of the CJPME Media Researcher: (Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words): Complain to the National Post about a pro-Israel and inflammatory article describing a peaceful protest tactic of showing Palestine liberation messages on electronic road signs as antisemitic and hateful.
- The article provocatively characterizes Palestinian liberation messages on electronic road signs, such as “Free Palestine,” “Escalate Now,” and “Globalize the Intifada” as anti-Israel.
- The article does not provide any other voices than pro-Israel voices: the mayor of Hampstead Jeremy Levi, Mr. Neil Oberman, a lawyer at Spiegel Sohmer Inc. and Conservative candidate for Mount Royal, and Eta Yudin, vice-president for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Quebec.
- The article does not question any claims made by Levi, such as that the messages constitute “hate speech against Jews” or that they are “hate propaganda,” which is not only false and fearmongering but demonstrates the bias of the article in conflating Palestinian liberation with antisemitism.
- Lastly, but most importantly, the article doesn’t provide any context about the genocide in Gaza, which is deeply problematic and entrenches the one-sidedness of the article. Omitting such an essential piece of information doesn’t help readers make sense of why protesters resort to peaceful and legal tactics such as changing an illuminated message.
