Toronto Sun calls Palestine protesters "Nazis" and "terror supporters"

Writing about all pro-Palestine protesters in Canada, Brian Lilley states, "We have the equivalent of Nazis marching in our streets day after day, week after week and very little is being done about it." This is a form of anti-Palestinian racism, as defined by the Arab Canadians Lawyer Association, since Lilley is trying to defame Palestinians as well as their allies as fascists and antisemites for opposing Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Toronto Sun columnist Brian Lilley makes libelous statements defaming pro-Palestinian demonstrations and their protesters as supporters of terrorism. While opinion writers have a wide latitude to express their views according to widely shared journalistic ethics in Canada, some of Lilley's remarks nakedly cross the line.

  • Writing about all pro-Palestine protesters in Canada, Brian Lilley states, "We have the equivalent of Nazis marching in our streets day after day, week after week and very little is being done about it" (bold added for emphasis). This is a form of anti-Palestinian racism, as defined by the Arab Canadians Lawyer Association, since Lilley is trying to defame Palestinians as well as their allies as fascists and antisemites for opposing Israel’s actions in Gaza.
  • Lilley also says that the recent pro-Palestinian protests in Toronto were “anti-Israel” and “pro-Hamas,” and that most protesters were allegedly Hezbollah supporters.
  • Lilley also repeats unverified claims, such as baselessly accusing Hezbollah of the death of Druze children in the Golan Heights in August. This is an allegation that the Israeli military has claimed repeatedly without evidence and which Hezbollah denies.
  • The headline calls all anti-genocide protesters "terror supporters." This again crosses the line of acceptability, even for an opinion article, as it promotes hatred against a particular group.
