CBC News insists that recognizing Palestinian statehood is "controversial"

CBC News correspondent Janyce McGregor spoke on the CBC News Network about Chandra Arya, a Liberal MP running for leader of the party. Her statement emphasized multiple times that Arya is “controversial.” The CBC Radio One version of the same story included only one of his allegedly “controversial” positions, that is that Canada should recognize Palestinian statehood.

Her statement emphasized multiple times that Arya is “controversial.” The CBC Radio One version of the same story included only one of his allegedly “controversial” positions, that is that Canada should recognize Palestinian statehood.

This segment appeared on CBC’s many television stations, as well as on virtually every CBC Radio One station across the country.

Such lopsided coverage is an example of CBC ‘manufacturing consent’ in real-time, bombarding Canadians with the message that recognizing Palestinian statehood is a losing policy. It's just not true.

  • Recognizing Palestinian statehood is official Canadian policy. The government of Canada officially “supports the creation of a sovereign, independent viable, democratic, and territorially contiguous Palestinian state.”
  • In November 2024, Canada voted in support of United Nations General Assembly resolution on “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan.” In its statement, Canada emphasized that it “remains committed to a two-state solution, including the creation of a Palestinian state.”
  • A 2024 Angus Reid poll found that 61% of Canadians see the creation of a Palestinian state as “key to the peace process.” Only 15% of Canadians disagreed with the sentiment. The same poll found that 55% of Canadian Jews support the creation of a Palestinian state.
  • In addition to CBC’s onslaught of coverage falsely amplifying that Palestinian statehood is some major controversy in Canada, during its interview with Chandra Arya on Power & Politics, a news ticker at the bottom of the screen paired his support for Palestinian statehood with “separating from monarchy” and instituting a “higher retirement age.” Separating from the monarchy and increasing retirement age are real controversial policies in Canada that, when paired with Palestinian statehood, create a false equivalency.
