CBC's editorial decisions downplay Israel's genocidal intent and mislead readers

"A CBC News article on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire downplays Israel’s genocidal intent in occupied Gaza and omits key context. It fails to mention Gaza as a territory occupied by Israel. The article profoundly misrepresents Hamas policies, as well as Israel's relationship with the Palestinian Authority."

Poor coverage - Media outlet to be critiqued

CBC's coverage of the ceasefire is mixed, but misses the mark on several key points. It is important to note that some CBC journalists feel handcuffed by CBC editors, who deliberately water down their work.

In this alert, we are less concerned with the journalists, who have provided exemplary coverage of Palestine the past, and more concerned with the biased editorializing of key aspects of the story.

Thanks, as always, for your collaboration,

A CBC News article on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire downplays Israel’s genocidal intent in occupied Gaza and omits key context. It fails to mention Gaza as a territory occupied by Israel. The article profoundly misrepresents Hamas policies, as well as Israel's relationship with the Palestinian Authority.

  • The article refers to Israel’s 467 days of genocide in the occupied Gaza Strip as “fighting” 4 times in the article.
  • The article refers to Hamas as “officially sworn to Israel's destruction,” which is factually incorrect. Hamas amended its 2017 charter to state that it “does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine.” The updated Hamas charter states that it would accept an Israeli state along the 1967 borders.
  • The article describes a forthcoming exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian "prisoners," but provides no meaningful context. About 10,000 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli custody, including 3,376 held without charge or trial under administrative detention. This includes hundreds of children. Many Palestinian detainees are subject to torture.
  • The phrase "Palestinian prisoners” is itself misleading, as it obscures the arbitrary and unlawful nature of the detention many face. It is being reported in Israeli media that many of the Palestinians to be released from administrative detention in accordance with the ceasefire were arrested after October 7, 2023, but not found to have been involved in the Hamas operations, solidifying their status not as prisoners but Palestinian hostages held in Israel.

Please help us pressure CBC to stop using soft language and misrepresenting Hamas, as these issues continue to persist and collective action is needed now more than ever to stop the media from whitewashing Israel’s war crimes.
