This National Post article uses inflammatory and misleading language to smear Palestinian protesters at Saint John’s Culturefest. The piece frames the demonstration as an antisemitic attack, erases its political context, and presents unverified allegations as fact. Such coverage perpetuates anti-Palestinian racism and silences Palestinian voices in Canada.

  • The headline is both inflammatory and misleading. By emphasizing the keffiyeh (a cultural Palestinian symbol) as threatening, the article stigmatizes Palestinian identity itself. Furthermore, by claiming protesters “targeted Jews,” the headline conflates antisemitism with criticisms of Israel and falsely framing Palestinians as antisemitic by default. This is a clear example of anti-Palestinian racism.
  • The article also reinforces anti-Palestinian racism by depicting protesters as masked, militarized, and threatening, feeding into a broader media pattern in which Palestinian voices are treated as inherently violent.
  • Allegations of assault and “hate crimes” are treated as established fact, even though police only confirmed arrests and stated that charges were “pending investigation.” Journalistic ethics require outlets to distinguish between allegations and facts. By failing to do so, the National Post frames Palestinians and their allies as inherently suspect.
  • The piece erases the reasons behind the protest — namely, Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and Canada’s complicity through political and financial support as well as arm shipments to Israel. Excluding this context misrepresents the protests as irrationally hostile rather than a legitimate act of opposition to apartheid and colonialism.
