National Post deletes tweet, rewrites article after backlash from CJPME and others

On August 11, 2025, the National Post — along with dozens of other Postmedia-owned outlets —published an article titled, “IDF kills Hamas terror cell leader posing as ‘Al Jazeera’ journalist,” in reference to Israel’s deliberate killing of renowned journalist Anas Al-Sharif. The original piece, written by the Jewish News Syndicate — an Israeli wire service known for right-wing, pro-Israel content — repeated Israel’s lies.

CJPME’s public criticism of the article was widely viewed and shared. In response to the backlash, Postmedia updated the headline to: “Israeli strike in Gaza slays Anas al-Sharif, who Israel says posed as an ‘Al Jazeera’ journalist while directing rocket attacks for Hamas.” While marginally less inflammatory, the headline and article remain deeply troubling. National Post also deleted its tweet about the article following significant push-back.

This episode shows that collective action works. Our voices can make Canada’s media more accountable. CJPME will continue to push for fair, responsible reporting on Palestine.
