On June 27, 2026, CBC News published a video segment titled "The war took their limbs, soccer gave them purpose again," highlighting a Palestinian women's amputee soccer team. However, the segment and its accompanying description utilized highly problematic and inaccurate framing, asserting that the women's injuries occurred after the "war against Israel broke out.”
CJPME raised the alarm regarding this framing, noting that it effectively blamed Palestinians for the violence and implicitly suggested that Gazans are waging a war against Israel. The complaint also pointed out that the segment failed to explicitly name Israel as the perpetrator of the airstrikes that caused the women's amputations.
Following CJPME’s repeated pushback and a request for a formal Ombuds review, CBC News updated the video's description on August 12, 2026, to walk back the objectionable framing and issued an official clarification, which reads:
"CLARIFICATION (Aug. 12, 2026): This story references ‘the war against Israel’ and an earlier version of this description said ‘the Gaza Strip looks to build up following years of fighting against Israel.’ The current conflict in Gaza is between Israel and Hamas.”
While the text description was updated to remove the suggestion that Palestinians are fighting a "war against Israel," CBC declined to change the segment's headline or edit the video's audio, which still fails to properly attribute the airstrikes to the Israeli military.
