In a Canadian Press article titled, “Pro-Palestine European Parliament member Rima Hassan says she was denied entry to Canada,” European Parliament member Rima Hassan was said to belong to a “far-left” party in France. The description of her party as “far left” is a point of considerable contention, and CJPME raised concerns about how many view this descriptor as a smear to make a prominent Palestine advocate seem fringe.
While no edits were made to that article, the next story by CP on the issue shifted its language in a way that aligns with CJPME’s recommendation to use the more impartial and fair language of “left-wing.” We consider this latest article to be more balanced and fair overall.
