Dear Ms. Donnelly,
I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to commend you for your recent publication of an article entitled “University presidents' trip to Israel undermines academic freedom and democracy,” published on February 3, 2023.[1]
The article helpfully considers the harmful impacts of a recent trip to Israel by Canadian university presidents, which was led by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). As the article notes, “no Palestinian universities were included on the Canadian universities’ tour.”
The article does a good job of analyzing this event and its implications for academic freedom and democracy, and provides a much-needed Palestinian perspective. These viewpoints are often overlooked or erased in the national discourse about Palestine-Israel. By republishing this article, National Post is contributing to much-needed professional, diverse, and fair-minded coverage on this issue.
Overall, the article is a refreshing example of how balanced viewpoints can enrich public discourse.
Thank you again for sharing this important story.
Respectfully,
Jason Toney
