"The Coast 89.7 segment only notes the context of violence against Israelis, without noting the greater violence against Palestinians. You mention a shooting against Israelis which took place on January 27th; however, you fail to mention the preceding large-scale Israeli attack on the Jenin refugee camp on January 26th, where at least ten Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces, three being civilians, including two children, marking the deadliest single day in the West Bank since 2005. The Israeli raid was preceded by a more than weeklong siege of Jericho by Israeli military forces."

Dear Coastal Radio News,
I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) regarding two issues in your recent news segment describing an alleged car ramming in East Jerusalem, which aired on February 10, 2023.
First, there is a problem of inaccurate language. Under international law, East Jerusalem is not “contested,” but Palestinian territory under Israeli military occupation.
Second, your segment only notes the context of violence against Israelis, without noting the greater violence against Palestinians. You mention a shooting against Israelis which took place on January 27th; however, you fail to mention the preceding large-scale Israeli attack on the Jenin refugee camp on January 26th, where at least ten Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces, three being civilians, including two children, marking the deadliest single day in the West Bank since 2005.[1][2] The Israeli raid was preceded by a more than weeklong siege of Jericho by Israeli military forces. [3]
We ask that you make the following an on-air correction:
“In our previous coverage, we described East Jerusalem as ‘contested.’ Under international law, East Jerusalem is considered Occupied Palestinian Territory.”
We also ask that you add additional context as part of your correction to ensure that you are meeting widely shared Canadian journalistic ethics guidelines[4]:
“Part of the rising tensions in Jerusalem involves the large-scale Israeli attack on the Jenin refugee camp on January 26th, where at least ten Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces, three being civilians including two children, marking the deadliest single day in the West Bank since 2005. The raid was preceded by a more than weeklong siege of Jericho by Israeli military forces.”
Thank you for making these corrections.
Respectfully,
Jason Toney
