Omission of civilian casualties in Gaza by Global News Calgary

"Your news segment reported that 'Israeli airstrikes killed at least 16 Palestinians in Gaza.' However, you fail to mention that, most of the casualties were Palestinian civilians, including at least 4 children. In fact, this number has since increased. As of yet, at least 28 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza, many of whom are civilians.

By omitting the fact that civilians were killed in Israel’s latest attack on Gaza, you are presenting the narrative preferred by the Israeli military, which says that any Palestinian living in Gaza is a 'target.'"

Dear Ms. Gentile, Ms. Clark and Mr. Reg,

I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to request an on-air clarification to your news segment regarding Israeli airstrikes on Gaza aired by Global News Morning on May 11, 2023.

Your news segment reported that “Israeli airstrikes killed at least 16 Palestinians in Gaza.” However, you fail to mention that, most of the casualties were Palestinian civilians, including at least 4 children. In fact, this number has since increased. As of yet, at least 28 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza, many of whom are civilians.

By omitting the fact that civilians were killed in Israel’s latest attack on Gaza, you are presenting the narrative preferred by the Israeli military, which says that any Palestinian living in Gaza is a “target.”

This is the second day in a row in which I have seen a Global News report on Palestinian causalities in Gaza that doesn’t mention the number of civilian and children casualties. If changes to your news segment as well as future reporting on the matter do not include civilian casualties, I will be forced to file a complaint with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC), which your news organization is a member of.

As such, I ask that you issue an on-air clarification to include the following sentence; “In a previous news report, we reported that 16 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. We want to clarify that the majority were Palestinian civilians, including at least 4 children. That number has since increased to 28 Palestinians killed.”

Please inform me when you air an appropriate clarification during a subsequent broadcast.

Thank you in advance for making this change. Should you wish, you can contact me at 438-380-5410 for more information.

Sincerely,

Reem Majid

Policy Analyst, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
