Article on far-right "Jerusalem Day" march leaves out that East Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian territory

"You fail to mention that the flag march, held in Jerusalem’s Old City, is considered occupied Palestinian territory according to international law. This is the central controversy surrounding the march, as Israeli nationalists are marching in protest of international law [...] Without including the context of occupation, you are omitting essential information from your story and misleading your listeners into assuming that Jerusalem’s Old City is located within Israel’s recognized borders."

Dear Mr. Sekhon, Ms. Cuthbertson, Ms. Connolly and Ms. Joseph,

I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express my concerns regarding your video segment titled, “Jerusalem Day: Israelis celebrate as Palestinians rally against flag march,” aired by Global News World on May 18, 2023.

I appreciate your coverage of the Palestinian rally in the Gaza strip in response to the “Jerusalem Day” march by right-wing Israelis. I also greatly appreciate that you included interviews with Palestinian protestors.

However, you fail to mention that the flag march, held in Jerusalem’s Old City, is considered occupied Palestinian territory according to international law. This is the central controversy surrounding the march, as Israeli nationalists are marching in protest of international law. This is not an opinion but a matter of settled consensus at the international level as confirmed by the United Nations Security Council, the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Without including the context of occupation, you are omitting essential information from your story and misleading your listeners into assuming that Jerusalem’s Old City is located within Israel’s recognized borders.

As such, I insist that you include an editor’s note which clarifies that, “The Old City of Jerusalem is not in Israel but in occupied Palestinian Territory.”

Thank you in advance for making this change. Should you wish, you can contact me at 438-380-5410 for more information.

Sincerely,

Reem Majid
