"The second part of your sentence is untrue. While its 1988 Charter vowed to work outside the framework of peace initiatives with Israel, since 2004 Hamas leaders have repeatedly and consistently stated they would accept a peace agreement based on Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 borders. Such an agreement would effectively mean accepting a negotiated peace and a de facto recognition of Israel."

Dear Mr. Cash and Ms. Stead,
I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to request an immediate correction to the article “China willing to help foster Palestinian peacemaking with Israel, Xi says” which was published by the Globe and Mail (Reuters) on June 14, 2023.
In the article, you write:
“The Islamist Hamas movement that rules Gaza is sworn to Israel’s destruction, rejecting a negotiated peace.”
This is a demonstrably false representation of Hamas and its goals.
- The second part of your sentence is untrue. While its 1988 Charter vowed to work outside the framework of peace initiatives with Israel, since 2004 Hamas leaders have repeatedly and consistently stated they would accept a peace agreement based on Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 borders. Such an agreement would effectively mean accepting a negotiated peace and a de facto recognition of Israel.
- While Hamas is an Islamist group, they are also a self-described Palestinian liberation movement, which you have not included in your description.
I insist that you update your sentence to read:
“Hamas, an Islamic and Palestinian liberation movement that governs Gaza, has stated it would accept a peace agreement only with specific conditions, including a return to the 1967 borders.”
Thank you in advance for making these changes. Should you wish, you can contact me at 438-380-5410 for more information.
Sincerely,
Yasmeen Amer
