"The Israeli military’s attack on Jenin is just one of many instances of violence perpetrated against the Palestinians this year. More worryingly, we have seen deadly attacks on Palestinians coming not just from the occupying military, but also from Israeli settlers under the protection of Israeli soldiers. It appears that the Israeli military have given the violent settlers a virtual “carte blanche” to commit acts of terror."

Dear Mr. Fleming, Mr. Sawafta,
I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) as I have some feedback and comments about your coverage of the Israeli military’s assault on Jenin, and specifically the article titled “Thousands of people displaced by Israel’s West Bank operation as violence spreads,” dated July 5, 2023.
While I appreciate your coverage of the events in Jenin, I do believe that your audience would benefit from more specific and descriptive language about the actions of the Israeli military. The Israeli military’s claim that their “operation” was aimed at “destroying infrastructure and weapons of militant groups in the camp” could not be further from the truth; as we have seen, Israel’s attack involved indiscriminate violence at civilians, even firing at journalists, hospitals, medics, and children. In fact, at least 4 of the confirmed dead were children.
The Israeli military’s attack on Jenin is just one of many instances of violence perpetrated against the Palestinians this year. More worryingly, we have seen deadly attacks on Palestinians coming not just from the occupying military, but also from Israeli settlers under the protection of Israeli soldiers. It appears that the Israeli military have given the violent settlers a virtual “carte blanche” to commit acts of terror.
This essential context should have been included in order to provide your readers with a better overall grasp of the situation in Palestine-Israel and the daily struggles that Palestinians deal with.
