Ali Sawafta’s reliance on the official Israeli military narrative results in a complete whitewash of Israel’s brutal military invasion and siege of the Jenin refugee camp. Describing Israel’s assault as an “operation” misrepresents the systematic and large-scale damage caused by Israeli forces, evidenced in the destruction of roads, homes, electricity and water networks, hospitals and even mosques. Not only does Sawafta fail to provide such important context, but he fails to mention that at least four of the twelve Palestinians killed were children between the ages of 16 and 18. Rather, the effects of the assault and its impact on Palestinians seem to be an afterthought, which Sawafta only pays slight attention to. By failing to include Palestinian voices and sources, the article is complicit in silencing the Palestinians in Jenin who have lived under the harshest conditions and continue to resist a military occupation and apartheid regime since 1967.
