Dear Ms Baillie and Mr Cook,
I am writing to thank you for your October 7 article titled "Canadians describe surprise Hamas attack on Israel as politicians condemn violence."
The reactions of the five Canadian politicians you quote seem to consist only of condemnation.
I was pleased to see you included the reaction of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, which asks for the government to join calls for a ceasefire. CJPME has made the connection between the escalating violence and the occupation and calls for an end to the “daily, brutal violence of Israel’s military occupation.“
Thank you for including CJPME President Thomas Woodley’s quote: “The Trudeau government has opposed efforts for Palestinian justice through non-violence”.
It is important for Canadians to know that their government has tried to block the last non- violent avenues open to Palestinians: boycott, the UN and the international courts.
You have shown readers there are also Canadian voices that recognize the status quo with respect to Israel- Palestine is untenable and condemning the situation is not enough.
Sincerely,
Renée Nunan-Rappard,
