Unbalanced reporting dehumanizes Palestinian victims of violence and hate

"On Sunday, October 15, observers reeled from the arrival of anti-Palestinian violence in North America: a six-year-old Palestinian child, Wadea Al-Fayoume, was that day stabbed 26 times in Illinois, killed for no reason other than that he was Palestinian. The very next day, you decided to publish an article representing Palestinians only as a hate threat, not, as is more factually the case, as targets of Israeli and overseas hate."

Dear Rob Roberts and Aileen Donnelly,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, cjpme.org) to express outrage about the dehumanizing imbalance of your October 16 report, “Hate crimes across Canada on the rise in wake of Israel-Hamas War.”

This is irresponsible journalistic malpractice which must be corrected.

On Sunday, October 15, observers reeled from the arrival of anti-Palestinian violence in North America: a six-year-old Palestinian child, Wadea Al-Fayoume, was that day stabbed 26 times in Illinois, killed for no reason other than that he was Palestinian.

The very next day, you decided to publish an article representing Palestinians only as a hate threat, not, as is more factually the case, as targets of Israeli and overseas hate. The icon of the right wing of Israel’s governing coalition, Meir Kahane, literally declared that it was a blessed duty or “mitzvah to hate,” and so urged the killing of Palestinian civilians.

To omit any mention of anti-Palestinian hate from this article is to print fake news.

More than 2,800 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since Saturday October 7, the New York Times reports, and more than 1,400 Israelis killed by Palestinians. You must start according equal attention to anti-Palestinian as to anti-Jewish hate and violence.

Anything less is an inflammatory contribution to a dangerous situation and a betrayal of the public trust. Feel free to reach me at 438-380-5410 should you wish to discuss this matter further.

Sincerely,

Dan Freeman-Maloy
