Thanks for including Palestinian perspectives and clarifying that Hamas does not control the Palestinian Health Ministry

"You humanized Palestinians by not saying that Hamas controls the Palestinian Health Ministry, as we often see in media coverage, and you gave a voice to a Canadian Gazan, Samir Saleh Al-Hams, and named the members of his family who got killed instead of providing only the number."

Dear Daniele Hamamdjian, Dawna Friesen, and Nethen Sekhon,

I am writing to thank you for the Global National segment: “Israel-Hamas conflict: Gaza crisis deepens as Israeli siege enters 19th night,” published on your website.

I appreciated the fact that you didn’t shy away from using the right words to describe the situation unfolding in Gaza while being on the ground.

Not only did you specify that they are Israel’s actions and that claims are coming from Israel, but you also gave voice to a member of the Palestinian Health Ministry, Dr. Kifah Toman.

You humanized Palestinians by not saying that Hamas controls the Palestinian Health Ministry, as we often see in media coverage, and you gave a voice to a Canadian Gazan, Samir Saleh Al-Hams, and named the members of his family who got killed instead of providing only the number.

Your segment, ending with a reflection on Canada’s lack of action, was poignant. From Samir Saleh’s words that Canada should support its citizens even if it doesn’t support Palestine to Daniele Hamamdjian’s words that she was told that there isn’t a number for the death toll but rather, it is a question of criminal indifference and intentional disregard for human life and that Canada does not think that Israel has crossed that line yet, couldn’t have been more well chosen.

Thank you, Daniele Hamamdjian, Dawna Friesen, and Global National, for this balanced media coverage of the situation in Gaza. Please continue to cover it in a balanced way.

Sincerely,

Fatima Haidar,

Media Analyst, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
