Thanks for advocating the need for a ceasefire in Gaza!

"The McGill Daily's position of the need for a ceasefire, humanitarian access and that Canada must stop funding the Israeli military is shared widely."

Dear Ms Fifield,

I am writing on behalf of https://cjpme.org/ Saskatoon Chapter, to thank you for this editorial, which informs and educates with well-sourced (unlike HRC's alert) facts and helpful links for all students.

The 'Alert' from Honest Reporting Canada makes for terrifying reading:
"Despite the remarkable claim that Israel is intentionally assaulting the civilian population of Gaza, the Israeli military has exercised remarkable focus, targeting only terrorist infrastructure and -unlike Hamas- not innocent civilians."
Remarkably dishonest.

There is no mention of Israel's obligations under international humanitarian law to protect the civilian population. Even if Gaza militant groups do use civilians as human shields ( Human Rights Watch [1] has no information one way or the other ) this does not absolve the Israeli army from its responsibilities to protect, especially children. Providing unhindered access to humanitarian aid is also the Israeli army's duty, according to HRW.

The McGill Daily's position of the need for a ceasefire, humanitarian access and that Canada must stop funding the Israeli military is shared widely.

Although I am writing for CJPME's Saskatoon Chapter, CJPME National wants you to know they stand ready to provide support on the HRC issue if that becomes necessary

Thank you again for your excellent editorial.

Sincerely,

Renée Nunan-Rappard
