Dear Ms. Jabakhanji,
I am writing to thank you for the excellent article titled “Humber College voices 'regret' after student removed from campus for posting Palestinian flag stickers” which was posted to the CBC news website on November 7.
You very clearly outline the types of problems students face in many educational institutions when they express support for the Palestinian people. Unfortunately, although they are educators, many administrators are unable to differentiate between Hamas and the Palestinian people. Further, like many people they are unable to sift through the propaganda from the Israeli Defence Forces [IDF] so as to fully understand the events on the ground in Israel and in Gaza.
That senior administrators at Humber College reviewed the Boycott Israeli Apartheid stickers and reversed the decision to expel Mr. Alaf is very good to know. Also good to know about the support Mr. Alaf received from fellow students.
Your citing the sources of the data you use to describe the violence is excellent as this allows the reader to make their own decision as to the veracity of the numbers. Unlike other reporters, you do not merely parrot the IDF propaganda. Thank you for this.
I also wish to thank the editors at CBC who published your article. There is indeed tension amongst students in Canadian institutions of learning. Bringing well reported articles such as this to the public’s attention serves to defuse some of those tensions.
All best wishes
Walter Thomas Beckett
