Thanks for fairly reporting on Sarah Jama‘s early call for a ceasefire

"As Sarah Jama points out, there was nothing wrong with her statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the end to all occupation of Palestinian land. This statement is in line with members of the international community, including the UN, which has been calling for a ceasefire since October 7, and human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, that you mention, that recognize Israel as an apartheid state."

Dear Bobby Hristova, Brodie Fenlon, Mari Ito, and Nancy Waugh,

I am writing to express my appreciation for your article: “Hamilton MPP Sarah Jama says NDP removal was due to her 'early' call for a ceasefire in Gaza,” published on November 15 in CBC News.

As a lot of articles are written about Sarah Jama, falsely accusing her of antisemitism, it was refreshing to read an article that gave a platform to her side of the story and her supporters.

As Sarah Jama points out, there was nothing wrong with her statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the end to all occupation of Palestinian land. This statement is in line with members of the international community, including the UN, which has been calling for a ceasefire since October 7, and human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International,
that you mention, that recognize Israel as an apartheid state.

I was incredibly shocked to learn that Jama was informed of her removal via email and that there are no appeal processes for when and how people are kicked out of their party.

Although I appreciate how you covered this story in a complete and nuanced way, I ask that you write Health Ministry instead of Hamas-run Health Ministry to make your story more accurate and nuanced, as the same standard is not applied when giving the number of casualties from the Israeli side.

I hope CBC will continue to cover stories in a complete and nuanced way and give a voice to critical perspectives.

Sincerely,
Fatima Haidar,
