Thanks for reporting on health risks developing in Gaza

Dear Ms. Baig, Ms. Baillie and Mr. Cook,

I am writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org/) to thank you for your article Canadian with parents in Gaza fears illness may kill them amid terrible conditions published online on December 20.

Your article illustrated clearly the impact on the health and safety of people in Gaza that goes beyond the bombing of their homes and infrastructure.  As someone with an aging parent who lives at a distance from me, I could identify with Mr. Abudaya’s worry and concern. However, I can only imagine what it would be like if I was unable to communicate with my father on a regular basis or if I knew that he did not have access to his medication and safe and clean living conditions.

I liked that you included the statements by Nicholas Papachrysostomou from Doctors without Borders. As someone coordinating emergency services on the ground in Gaza, his perspective supported the lived experience of not only Mr. Abudaya’s parents but for all of the Palestinians who continue to live in what can only be described as a heartbreaking and mindnumbing reality.

Thank you again for reporting humanely and accurately the ongoing suffering that Palestinians continue to endure even if they survive the bombing.  I hope you will continue to do so in future articles.

Sincerely,

Debbie Hubbard
