Please help us criticize an opinion article by Marcus Gee in the Globe and Mail that denies genocide and makes other false claims.
- The article consistently conflates antisemitism with anti-Zionism.
- Gee falsely claims that Israel is singled out and that it suffers from double-standard, which could not be further from the truth. Israel has always been shielded from any type of criticism on the international stage, and UN resolutions condemning its treatment of the Palestinians have never amounted to any real change.
- Gee denies that a genocide is happening in Gaza, claiming that it is “a term of propaganda” and that Canada has to “muster that the charge of genocide is false.” This goes against reputable and respectable people who stated that a genocide is occurring in Gaza, such as legal scholars, Raz Segal, a holocaust and genocide expert, and the UN. Canada is also a signatory to the Genocide Convention and has a duty to work to prevent it.
- Gee claims that Israel’s bombardment campaign is “intended to destroy Hamas, not the Palestinian people” and that “Israel tries to avoid killing civilians.” This is false, as the casualties are civilians and a majority of women and children. Israel is also targeting infrastructures where they are taking shelter, such as residential buildings, schools, bakeries, refugee camps, and hospitals, protected under international law.
