Missing information concerning the ruling of Israel’s ICJ case

"This is an inaccurate and incomplete depiction of what the International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to do. Also, such words tend to downplay the severity and gravity of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which amount to genocide."

Dear Antony Robart, Redmond Shannon, Callum Smith, and Dave Squires,

I am writing to express my concern about the January 29 at 8:41 Global News Morning Halifax News segment.

While talking about the UNWRA and countries such as Canada suspending the funding, correspondent Redmond Shannon says: “The Palestinian Prime Minister in the West Bank says the threat to Gazan aid comes just as the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to do more to help civilians in Gaza.”

This is an inaccurate and incomplete depiction of what the International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to do.

Also, such words tend to downplay the severity and gravity of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which amount to genocide.

The correspondent should have mentioned that South Africa brought Israel’s case to the ICJ under the Genocide Convention since it is accusing it of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza since October 7, where as of January 28, at least 26,422 Palestinians have been killed and 65,087 Palestinians were injured.

The correspondent also should have mentioned that on Friday, January 26, the ICJ ruled that genocide is “plausible” and that Israel must take all measures to prevent genocide, prevent and punish the incitement to genocide, and allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Only mentioning that “the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to do more to help civilians in Gaza” is inaccurate, incomplete, and unfair.

The correspondent should have given the abovementioned information to be more fair, accurate, and balanced.

I hope Global News Morning Halifax will report Israel’s actions in an accurate, fair, and balanced manner in the future.

Sincerely,

Fatima Haidar,

Media Analyst, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
