Beyond the police’s overt conflation of antisemitism and criticism of Israel, the police’s recent crackdown on pro-Palestine protestors demonstrates how systems of oppression, anywhere, are inextricably linked to the liberation of Palestine. The foundations of oppression– policing, surveillance, and incarceration– that uphold Israeli apartheid are not dissimilar to the ones that uphold systemic racism and dispossession of marginalized populations in Canada and the US. The security company G4s, which once played a significant role in designing and running Israeli prisons, checkpoints, and police buildings in Israel-Palestine, has trained the historically racist RCMP. In the same vein, Canadian and American police officers have been sent to Israel for training by Israel’s military and police forces. This intimate and ongoing exchange of aggressive/militarized policing tactics ensures the dispossession of Palestinians in Palestine, as well as the continued repression of Black, Indigenous, Arab, and other marginalized communities in Canada and the US.
