I agree with Aisha Sherazi that Canada’s brilliant façade is crumbling. Since October 7, we have been forced to question Canada’s vision as a country that values human rights. While Canada has been claiming that it has not been arming Israel, we discovered that the government has approved exports of $28.5 M worth of arms between October and December 2023 to Israel, which is more than any other year over the past 30 years. This confirms the fears some had about Canada’s complicity in Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians and its double standard in the way it gives greater value to white lives over BIPOC lives. It also makes clear how Canada’s policies to uphold human rights have not been applied when it comes to Palestine and the Palestinians. Now may be the opportunity to have a collective reflection and discussion on Canada’s unresolved racism.
