National Post's EIC Rob Roberts Failure to Report on Rafah Should Weigh Heavily on His Conscience

"While the National Post has published an endless stream of articles focused on Hamas firing rockets at Tel Aviv which did barely any damage and thousands of articles solely recounting the Israeli perspective of the events on October 7, it is baffling that there has been no mention of the recent massacre of civilians in Rafah today"

To:

Dear Mr. Roberts,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East to express my deep concern regarding the National Post's lack of reporting on the current situation in Rafah.

While the National Post has published an endless stream of articles focused on Hamas firing rockets at Tel Aviv which did barely any damage and thousands of articles solely recounting the Israeli perspective of the events on October 7, it is baffling that there has been no mention of the recent massacre of civilians in Rafah today.

According to Al Jazeera, Israeli missiles struck the camp in the night, causing a fire that razed the encampment to the ground and killed at least 45 people. Additionally, there have been reports of an Israeli drone strike on the Kuwait Specialty Hospital in Rafah, resulting in the deaths of two staff members. The Palestine Red Crescent Society reported that many of those who died were also burned alive inside their tents.

The omission of these events in your newspaper reflects a clear pro-Israel bias.

YOU, as the Editor-in-Chief, bear full editorial responsibility for the paper. YOUR selective reporting creates an imbalanced narrative that minimizes the suffering and ongoing genocide faced by Palestinians. YOU allow a lack of coverage that is appalling, especially given the heavy loss of civilian lives in Rafah. YOU should be ashamed that there isn’t even a word about Rafah on your website today.

Need I remind you that the National Post is a member of Canada’s National NewsMedia Council and that it is expected that your masthead and reporters provide balanced and comprehensive coverage of facts in a conflict. That means inclusion of reports of atrocities being committed by Israel in Rafah and the rest of Gaza. You cannot parrot the events of October 7 and stories on Israeli hostages’ ad nauseum anymore.

Enough with this double standard and inform your readers of what’s happening on the ground in Gaza.

I await your response,

Anthony Issa
