(Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words):
CJPME staff have been informed by a reliable source that Troy Media, an editorial content provider to various Canadian newspapers, suppresses articles that are critical of Israel or sensitive to Palestine. Today, we take issue with a hateful opinion piece by Hymie Rubenstein defaming Palestinians and Muslims, which was published in 4 different papers, as well as on the Troy Media website. We are asking responders to help us make it clear to Troy Media that the article we are sharing is unacceptable and reflects a bias that needs correcting.
Here are some points Rubenstein makes that you can mention in your letter:
- Rubenstein asserts that October 7 was a “fanatical desire, rooted in Muslim religious beliefs and buttressed by fake history, to exterminate the Jews of Israel.” This is blatant Islamophobia.
- Rubenstein selectively quotes from the 1988 Hamas Charter to further his point of rooting the “extermination of Jews” in “Muslim religious beliefs.” However, Hamas adopted a Charter in 2017, which clearly states that Hamas’s fight is not against Jews but against the Zionist project.
- Rubenstein assigns genocidal intent to Palestinians by writing that “had there been no resistance to the Oct. 7 invasion, all 7.1 million Jews living in Israel would have been systematically executed Holocaust-style.” This is not only false but also extreme anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia.
- Rubenstein tries to refute that Israel is racist and based on apartheid by saying that “its large Arab population enjoys freedom and prosperity denied to their brethren elsewhere in the region.” This goes against the many reports of reputable human rights groups, such as Amnesty International, that provide compelling evidence that Israel is an apartheid state.
