Global News article on weekend protest could have been slightly stronger

"In terms of improving the coverage, I would simply have suggested, first, that Mr. Carpenter seek a direct quote from a representative of the protesting group. Second, I would have suggested that Mr. Carpenter seek a supportive comment from another player. He quotes a bystander, who questions the group’s tactics, but Carpenter does not seek comment/input from other groups which would be supportive."

Dear Mr. Carpenter, Ms. Joseph,

Overall, I have to admit that I felt that Mr. Carpenter’s article on the protest on the CNN tracks over the weekend (“Pro-Palestinian protesters block CN rail line south of Montreal, four arrested”) was decently fair.  I appreciate that fact that he quoted from the protesting group’s press statement on the action, and that he made mention of the International Criminal Court proceeding initiated by the South African government over the winter.

In terms of improving the coverage, I would simply have suggested, first, that Mr. Carpenter seek a direct quote from a representative of the protesting group.  Second, I would have suggested that Mr. Carpenter seek a supportive comment from another player.  He quotes a bystander, who questions the group’s tactics, but Carpenter does not seek comment/input from other groups which would be supportive.  As you both know, there has been immense pressure from large coalitions demanding that Canada pressure Israel to accept a ceasefire, and stop arms sales to Israel.

Should you wish to discuss further, you can reach me at 438-380-5410.

Sincerely,

Thomas Woodley, MPA
