RE: With Hezbollah and Israel on the brink of all-out war, Lebanon confronts its fragile political system (letter to the editor submission)

Mackinnon's article seems to attribute all of Lebanon's ills to Hezbollah which is unfair. Hezbollah has only existed since 1982 and was created to liberate Lebanon from Israeli occupation, which began in 1982 and ended in 2000. In other words, Hezbollah would have never existed otherwise. Hezbollah's existence and survival are, therefore, consistent with the threat Israel poses to the countries in the Middle East. To go on and quote Chamoun furthers Mackinnon’s prejudice as Chamoun’s grandfather was instrumental in the foundation of the Lebanese Front, a coalition of right-wing Lebanese nationalist parties whose own party cooperated with Israel against the Palestinians. Perhaps one should reflect instead on the following questions: Would Lebanon have ceased to exist without Hezbollah? Isn't the privilege that some Lebanese in the northern communities feel of not fearing for their life due to Hezbollah and the hits that southern Lebanon is taking?
