Where is the accountability for Israel's current assault on Gaza?

"My key concern with the news report is that the impression of whom is to blame for the resumption of Israel’s military assault on Gaza is Hamas. The article emphasizes Israel’s claim that Hamas refused a ceasefire extension. However, the reality is that Israel broke the ceasefire by conducting airstrikes and killing hundreds of unprotected civilians, many of whom were children."

March 19, 2025

Dear Ms. Cuthbertson, Mr. Hobson and Mx. Govani,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) to express concerns regarding Global News BC1’s news report that aired on March 18, 2025 at approximately 06:33 am.

My key concern with the news report is that the impression of whom is to blame for the resumption of Israel’s military assault on Gaza is Hamas. The article emphasizes Israel’s claim that Hamas refused a ceasefire extension. However, the reality is that Israel broke the ceasefire by conducting airstrikes and killing hundreds of unprotected civilians, many of whom were children. Furthermore, the report failed to highlight how Israel has been the one deliberately refusing to enter phase two of the ceasefire deal and is using military escalation and denial of food aid to pressure Hamas into accepting worse terms.

Providing context and balance are standards for responsible journalism. The absence of any critical comment on Israel’s actions or any acknowledgement of the global response to the attacks was not only disappointing but irresponsible reporting. Quatar and Egypt along with other countries have condemned Israel for not only breaking the ceasefire agreement but also for unsettling the stability and security of the region.

As the violence in Gaza ramps up, I will be monitoring your coverage of the genocide and anticipate seeing more comprehensive coverage in future broadcasts.

I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Debbie Hubbard
