Comments of the CJPME Media Researcher: (Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words): Once again, the Toronto Sun has published an opinion piece riddled with anti-Palestinian racism. In his latest column, Brian Lilley attacks a police event guide for a protest commemorating the Nakba—the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians in 1948 to establish a Jewish state. Lilley flirts with outright Nakba denial throughout the piece, suggesting to readers it wasn't real by doing things like putting Nakba in quotes. We urge you to write to Brian Lilley and Editor-in-Chief Adrienne Batra to explain that this column perpetuates racism and historical erasure, and that it should be corrected.
- Lilley goes so far as to say the guide “reads like Hamas propaganda.” To suggest that the Nakba, an internationally recognized historical event commemorated annually on May 15, is equivalent to propaganda is a textbook example of Nakba denial, a pervasive form of anti-Palestinian racism that seeks to erase the collective trauma and lived history of the Palestinian people.
- The Nakba is a historical event, recognized by international scholars, human rights organizations, and the United Nations. Denying the Nakba is a form of anti-Palestinian racism that should not be tolerated. It is a clear violation of basic journalistic standards to so blatantly erase Palestinian history in the guise of opinion.
- There are other questionable statements in the piece that you are welcome to challenge.
