Dear Editor,

Re: “Canada’s remarkable joint statement on the suffering in Gaza is a good first step” (July 22, 2025)

Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock rightly call for “moral clarity, political courage, and urgent, decisive action”.

Yet, the joint statement merely indicates that the 26 partners are “prepared to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to security and peace…”, following a May 19 joint statement by Canada, France and the U.K. that had already warned “If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response”.

On behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, and as a concerned Canadian, I demand that the government takes concrete actions to stop Israel’s ongoing violations of international law. Canada must impose sanctions and a two-way arms embargo on Israel, and exert meaningful pressure to allow full, immediate and unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, enforced through international mechanisms.

Sincerely,

Alison Jenkins
