To the Globe and Mail Newsroom,
I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to give feedback regarding the article titled “Hussam al-Masri, Reuters journalist killed by Israeli strike, reported on Gaza while living in a tent” published today, August 27, 2025.
First off, I’d like to thank you for providing readers insights into Hussam al-Masri’s life, work and family and for portraying the dedication he had to his profession with detail and care. And also, I appreciate the headline’s naming of Israel as the perpetrator of the strike that killed Hussam, which is important for fairness, clarity and accuracy.
Yet, the article left out the insidious reasons why “conditions in the Palestinian enclave [have] descended further into hunger and desperation” and why there is a “struggle to find food”.
Not only has Israel been imposing a brutal siege on the Gaza strip since 2007, including controlling the flow of food into Gaza and counting how many calories Palestinians consume, but Israel has also not allowed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza for months, and since May, Israel has been controlling the deadly and chaotic, and highly limited, distribution of food through the so-called US-Israel backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, with the Gaza Ministry of Health reporting that there have been 2,018 fatalities and more than 14,947 injuries between May 27 and August 21, 2025 among people trying to access food supplies.
Taken together, Israel’s actions have led to famine in Gaza - conditions that were experienced by al-Masri himself.
Gaza and its population has not “descended further into hunger and desperation” - Israel has been imposing, and continues to deliberately impose, man-made famine conditions on Palestinians.
Providing these vitally important facts is necessary to properly honour al-Masri and the 272 other Palestinian journalists and media workers killed by Israel since October 7, 2023. I kindly urge your newsroom to revise the article accordingly.
Sincerely,
Alison Jenkins
