Calling it the “Israel-Hamas war” suggests two equal sides, when in reality Israel is an occupying power with one of the most advanced militaries in the world, and Palestinians are a stateless, besieged population living under apartheid. This framing erases the power imbalance and diminishes the reality of Palestinian suffering under a genocidal campaign.
Dear Globe and Mail newsroom,I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) to express my concern regarding your article titled “For volunteer paramedics in Gaza, every lost second can mean a lost life,” published on September 30, 2025.
While I appreciate that your article humanizes the perspective of Palestinian medic Mohammed Hosni, I take issue with the way it frames Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza.
In particular, I take issue with the following sentence:
“The ambulance has become an extension of himself since the Israel-Hamas war began almost two years ago.”
Additionaly, referring to the genocide as a “war” whitewashes Israel’s responsability in the destruction of Gaza. Palestinians in Gaza are being deliberately targeted through Israel’s siege, famine, bombings of hospitals, and systematic destruction of infrastructure.
I believe that the Globe and Mail should at the very least attribute responsibility to Israel (ie. since Israel’s ongoing assault and blockade of Gaza escalated).
I await your response,
--
