To be clear, I am not asking you to take sides in your reporting on Palestine and Israel but rather to provide reporting that includes new and significant developments in both Canadian and United Nations positions. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your responses to my questions and request.
Dear Ms. Zoledziowski, Mr. Boshra and Mr. Moore,
I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) regarding the CBC News article that was posted online on September 29, 2025 - 5 takeaways from Trump's proposal to end war in Gaza
Thank you for capturing the key points of President Trump’s proposal to end the genocide in Gaza and for including the voices of Ibrahim Joudeh, a Palestinian and Michael Lynk, the former UN Human Rights Council’s Special Raporteur for the Human Rights Situation in the Palestinian Territories. I also appreciated that you named the skepticism of the Palestinians towards the proposal in particular with respect to the roles that Tony Blair and the US would have in overseeing the implementation of the proposal.
I recognize the important role that CBC has with Canadians as our national public broadcaster and I have questions and a request:
- On September 21, Canada recognized the State of Palestine with conditions attached. Does CBC intend to change their policy in terms of their use of the word ‘Palestine’ in future articles in light of Canada’s recognition? If so, when?
- Throughout the article, the word ‘war’ was used to describe Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. This in spite of a report released by a UN commission of Inquiry on September 16 that identified Israel’s campaign in Gaza as ‘genocide’ or ‘a genocidal campaign’. I would ask that you review and consider revising your article to include the word ‘genocide’ or ‘genocidal’ to describe Israel’s campaign. I also would like to know why those words weren’t included in the otherwise excellent article.
To be clear, I am not asking you to take sides in your reporting on Palestine and Israel but rather to provide reporting that includes new and significant developments in both Canadian and United Nations positions. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your responses to my questions and request.
Sincerely,
Debbie Hubbard
