In addition to genocide, Israel has subjected Palestinians in Gaza to decades of blockade, illegal occupation, and apartheid, as documented by UN bodies and many international and Israeli human rights organizations. The fact that the segment doesn’t mention any of this whitewashes Israel’s war crimes.
To the Global Lethbridge (CISA) / Global News Morning teams,
I’m writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express concerns regarding a news segment aired today, on October 1, 2025 at 6:15 AM on Global Lethbridge (CISA) Global News Morning.
Starting at 6:17:50, the segment platforms Trump’s “Peace Plan” without criticism, presents Trump’s ultimatum to Hamas (“3-4 days or a very sad end”) without skepticism, and indicates it has “the backing of several global leaders including Canada”. Yet, the plan lacks a clear timeline or method to enforce Israeli compliance, despite that the UN commission of Inquiry has concluded that Israel has and is continuing to commit genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, in a report released two weeks ago.
The presenter’s description of Palestinians as merely being “caught in the crosshairs” at 6:18:11 trivializes a very grave situation. Palestinians are portrayed in snippets of despair (“we are finished,” “we are slaughtered”), which perpetuates stereotypes of Palestinians as powerless victims rather than rights-holders or political actors. There is no mention that international law guarantees Palestinians the right to self-determination, or that Israel’s occupation and siege are illegal. Israeli civilians are presented as “welcoming the plan” with calm, rational commentary. Overall, this is biased, asymmetrical framing, which could have been avoided if a Palestinian expert, human rights group, or political representative had been invited to share their views for this segment.
At 6:19:10, Trump is quoted saying Israel will be allowed to “do what they have to do” if Hamas refuses the deal, which implies further bombings of civilians. The broadcast platforms his threat without condemning or contextualizing the consequences as collective punishment or a war crime, or mentioning that Israel is commiting a genocide. Airing segments like this without criticism justifies violence and normalizes genocidal language and intent.
As coverage of this US-sponsored plan continues in the coming days, and of Israel’s genocide in the coming weeks and months, I strongly urge your newsroom to consult with Palestinian humanitarian and human rights groups, experts, and political parties, to bring a more balanced framing to your coverage, in accordance with the Canadian Association of Journalists’ code of ethics.
Sincerely,
Alison Jenkins
