Thanks to Linda McQuaig for her October 19th opinion piece, The harsh criticism of Avi Lewis is getting scary.
Mainstream Canadian media systematically ignores that there are long-standing divisions among Jewish communities around Zionism and support for the state of Israel. Instead, we hear the monotonous refrain that all Jews support Israel, and that anyone opposing the genocide in Gaza must be anti-Semitic.
So when a Jewish public figure as prominent as Avi Lewis challenges this narrative and speaks out against the genocide as a Jew, Zionists become apoplectic. The lie about a monolithic Jewish community is exposed.
Canadians have become well acquainted with the bully tactics of the Israel lobby. But it is unprecedented for mainstream media such as the National Post to publish suggestions that Jewish law requires dissenters be silenced, citing a story in which critics of Moses are swallowed alive by the earth and consumed by fire. This is a thinly veiled incitement to murder.
