Re: “A warning about civil liberties on Canadian university campuses”

The article’s description of how activism and protest against Israel’s genocidal violence against the Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank - as well as events that relate to Palestine - are being limited and policed on campuses across Canada - is timely and important.

To the Canadian Dimension newsroom,

I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express appreciation for the article titled “A warning about civil liberties on Canadian university campuses” published yesterday.

Both the writers and the outlet deserve thanks for this well-contextualized and insightful piece, which clearly names campus repression of Palestine activism as a civil liberties issue.

The article’s description of how activism and protest against Israel’s genocidal violence against the Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank - as well as events that relate to Palestine - are being limited and policed on campuses across Canada - is timely and important.

Of note, the article also properly points out the distinction between antisemitism and legitimate criticism of Israel, calls out the problems of policing on campus, and links campus repression with provincial and federal policy shifts (Bill 33, Bill C-9 and the Canadian Handbook on IHRA). These collective actions limit Charter-protected freedoms of expression, assembly, and academic freedom, which should be a concern to all Canadians.

I encourage Canadian Dimension to continue to draw attention to perspectives and issues that are often sidelined in Canadian mainstream media.

Sincerely,

Alison Jenkins
