Feedback on today's article "Terms of U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal remain unclear as some attacks continue"

"Based on the abundant information available about Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon that was available even at the time this Associated Press article went to press, it should be revised to include that not only that 'attacks in Iran and Gulf Arab countries resumed on Wednesday,' but also, that Israel continued to attack Lebanon after the ceasefire was announced on Tuesday and Wednesday."

To the Globe and Mail and the Associated Press editorial newsrooms.

I’m writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express concern about the article titled “Terms of U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal remain unclear as some attacks continue” published today by the Globe and Mail.

The article fails to mention Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon. Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday, after the “ceasefire deal” was announced: eight people were killed and 22 others were injured in an Israeli attack on the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon; two Israeli air strikes were reported, one in the city of Tyre, which hit near a hospital shortly after the announcement by Donald Trump, and another in the town of Machgharah in the Bekaa Valley; that Israeli forces have shelled the town of Baraachit in southern Lebanon; and that an Israeli air raid hit an ambulance in the town of Qlaileh, near the coastal city of Tyre. On Wednesday, Al Jazeera reported that at least 89 people had been killed and more than 700 wounded in Israel’s attacks across Lebanon - the Israeli army launched what it said were 100 air strikes at multiple locations across Lebanon in a span of 10 minutes.

Based on the abundant information available about Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon that was available even at the time this Associated Press article went to press, it should be revised to include that not only that “attacks in Iran and Gulf Arab countries resumed on Wednesday," but also, that Israel continued to attack Lebanon after the ceasefire was announced on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I urge the Globe and Mail and Associated Press to revise the article accordingly, in order to align with the Canadian Association of Journalists ethics guidelines and standard of accuracy. In addition, given the emerging news of civilian death and destruction as a result of Israel’s continued onslaught in Lebanon, with mass casualty events declared at multiple hospitals today, we expect the Globe and Mail to provide comprehensive coverage of these atrocities.

Sincerely,

Alison Jenkins
