"In its correction, CBC Manitoba stated that there was no substance to the claim that Palestinians may have been buried alive. However, the correction relies on a statement from the Israeli military denying claims of IDF members burying Palestinian civilians."
Good afternoon Bassem,
I am writing to you on behalf of CJPME regarding an on-air correction made by CBC Manitoba after an alert campaign by HRC. The correction addresses comments made by guest Dorotea Gucciardo about alleged mass graves outside Gaza’s Nasser Hospital.
While I recognize the importance of issuing corrections when warranted, I am concerned that this particular correction may itself be misleading and inaccurate.
In its correction, CBC Manitoba stated that there was no substance to the claim that Palestinians may have been buried alive. However, the correction relies on a statement from the Israeli military denying claims of IDF members burying Palestinian civilians.
From information I’ve gathered, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement on April 23, 2024 on the recovery of hundreds of Palestinian bodies. These Palestinian bodies had their hands bound and stripped of clothing in mass graves next to the Nasser and Al-Shifa hospitals.
Similarly, an Al Jazeera report from April 25, 2024 cited an Palestinian Civil Defence official who believed that “ten bodies found in Gaza’s mass graves had their hands bound while others still had medical tubes attached to them, indicating they may have been buried alive”
This context is concerning given the correction issued by CBC Manitoba said there is no substance to Ms. Gucciardo’s claims.
I don’t believe this is true and needs more verification from the CBC.
The current correction risks dismissing serious allegations of potential war crimes by the Israeli military on Palestinian civilians.
As standards editor, I would greatly appreciate your attention on this segment and any consideration you can give to revisiting or clarifying the correction.
I look forward to your response,
