April 20 Opinion piece by John Bolton

"The US/Israeli insistence that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon is pure hegemonic racism. The only country on the planet that has used nuclear weapons against a defenceless civilian population - twice - is the US. For that country to declare who is allowed and denied nuclear weapons is beyond hypocritical."

To the Globe and Mail editorial newsroom,

I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) about your article “Regime change is the only responsible option to eliminate the threat of Iran” by John Bolton, published on April 20, 2026.

This opinion piece begins with criticism of Trump’s mismanagement of the illegal war on Iran, but not the war itself, then it reverts to tired repetition of unfounded “threats” of the Iranian regime. It follows, unsurprisingly, with the Netanyahu recommended destruction of the Iranian “regime” so that we may all be safe again. Along the way Mr. Bolton writes as an apologist for illegal US interference in the sovereignty of other nations throughout the region.

The biggest threat to peace and stability in the Middle East is the US-backed Israeli regime. Since October 2023 Israel has displaced nearly 5.3 million people in the region. It has also killed at least 73,000 people in Gaza and the West Bank and 5,200 people in Lebanon, many of them children. It has attacked hospitals, UN aid centres, journalists and healthcare workers in addition to starving a civilian population. These are staggering facts that warrant prosecution, not support. Yet Mr. Bolton expects us to swallow the idea that Iran is a threat. Nonsense.

The claim that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon is unfounded and amounts to simple fear mongering and heartless justification for Israeli-US crimes. Bolton conveniently leaves out the fact that Israel has undeclared nuclear weapons and, as such, their arsenal is not subject to any inspections or oversight. Given their aggressive behaviour and America’s backing it should come as no surprise that their neighbours might want their own weapons as protection.

Mr. Bolton has a long record of undermining diplomacy between the US and Iran; he has consistently pushed for withdrawal from international agreements and advocated for military action even when the IAEA verified Iranian compliance. In the context of the April 2026 ceasefire, he continues to characterize the situation as fragile and a potential “strategic defeat” which serves only to justify continued regional aggression rather than reflecting the latest intelligence findings.

The US/Israeli insistence that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon is pure hegemonic racism. The only country on the planet that has used nuclear weapons against a defenceless civilian population - twice - is the US. For that country to declare who is allowed and denied nuclear weapons is beyond hypocritical. The real issue here is that Israel and the US cannot stand anyone who will not submit to their dominance. Like true bullies it is only they who are allowed to strike and absolutely no one is allowed to hit back. Unfortunately Iran won’t play their game.

The Globe and Mail is participating in dangerous propaganda to publish such outrageous and aggressive opinions as Mr. Bolton’s.

Will the Globe publish a reasonable and fair opinion piece to achieve the balance it claims to uphold?

Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response.
