"To adhere to journalistic principles of impartiality and accuracy the article should be corrected to state that Gaza is “undisputed” Palestinian territory."
To the Toronto Sun newsroom,
I am writing on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) regarding your article “IRAN WAR: IRGC says Strait of Hormuz won't reopen unless U.S. agrees to demands“ by Ling Hui published on August 9, 2026.
We thank you for the balance of Iranian and US sources used in this piece. There are a couple of points of contention I would like to highlight.
Firstly it is crucial to this story to mention that this is an illegal war started by the US and Israel. At times the article makes it sound as if Iran is the impediment to a resolution when they are, in fact, the victim of US and Israeli aggression.
In the second half of the article there is some terminology that deserves attention.
The line, “Netanyahu rejected Trump’s plan and said the Israeli military will not pull out of the disputed territory until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed, Reuters reported.”
It is a matter of fact that Gaza is Palestinian territory and it is not “disputed”. Gaza has suffered under an illegal Israeli siege and genocide for almost 20 years.
This wording lends credibility to the idea that Gaza’s is not recognised as Palestinian territory which is absolutely not true. The only entity “disputing” this fact is Netanyahu and his ilk who are in the process of stealing Gaza from the Palestinians. If you are going to quote or paraphrase Netanyahu then you must also clarify the factual record in the same portion of the article.
To adhere to journalistic principles of impartiality and accuracy the article should be corrected to state that Gaza is “undisputed” Palestinian territory.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response and amendment.
