Thank you: "Anti-Zionism and antisemitism should not be conflated"

We were glad to see the piece drawing a clear line between antisemitism, which is a form of bigotry against Jews and protected under the Charter, and Zionism, which the author describes as a political ideology open to critique like any other.

Dear Ms. Sucharov and Mr. Walmsley

I'm writing to you on behalf of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, https://www.cjpme.org) to express our appreciation for the opinion article "Anti-Zionism and antisemitism should not be conflated," published on October 7, 2026.

We were glad to see the piece drawing a clear line between antisemitism, which is a form of bigotry against Jews and protected under the Charter, and Zionism, which the author describes as a political ideology open to critique like any other. Public debate in Canada too often treats these as interchangeable. That makes legitimate criticism of a state's policies hard to separate from hatred of a people, and it leaves Jewish and Palestinian communities both less well served. Publishing an argument that keeps the two apart gives readers a more precise framework for the conversation we need.

We also appreciated the article's attention to context and definition. It asks readers to consider the timing of the recent rise in antisemitism in Canada before attributing it to anti-Zionism. It also draws on Ms. Sucharov's own survey research, which found that support for Zionism among respondents varied sharply depending on how the term was defined. That is a useful reminder that participants in this debate are often using the same word to mean different things, and that clarity about terms should come before conclusions. Finally, the piece engages with the perspective of Palestinians who have lived under the policies carried out in the name of Zionism, a perspective that is often missing from Canadian opinion pages.

We appreciate The Globe's decision to give space to this view, and we encourage you to continue publishing a range of informed perspectives on this subject.

Sincerely,

Meghan Raza
