Another Saltwire article gives a distorted narrative

Saltwire published another problematic article by Reuters on the same subject as our last alert: a soft, uncritical story on the Israeli’s apparent condemnation of settler attacks. This time a US angle was added.

On June 28, 2023, Saltwire published another problematic article by Reuters on the same subject as our last alert: a soft, uncritical story on the Israeli’s apparent condemnation of settler attacks. This time a US angle was added.

Again, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant is quoted at length. Palestinians are briefly mentioned, but no specific individuals are quoted, just basic sentiments from general “witnesses” and “officials.” It’s a better article than the last, but still wholly inadequate from a supposedly serious media outlet.

There is much to be criticized.

The framing puts the blame squarely on Palestinians, specifically a Hamas attack on four Israeli settlers. This omits the June 19 Israeli military assault on the Jenin Refugee Camp that killed 7 Palestinians. The article also fails to cite Israel’s powerful National security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has called the settler attackers “sweet kids” and refuses to condemn the attacks.

Canadian readers deserve better journalism. Reuters reporting on this issue has not met their own standards, let alone those in Canada. Please join us in adding that Saltwire take corrective action.
