Please help us thank Toronto Star and Shree Paradkar for an excellent opinion article about the implications of Claudine Gay’s (first Black President of Harvard), takedown amidst her “insufficient” response to a congressional committee on antisemitism.
Not only does this opinion article give a clear picture of what really happened and why she resigned, but it also sheds light on racism that permeates our institutions.
- The opinion article points out the double standard that people of color and black people in positions of power face for making any real or perceived mistake while their white counterparts can rely on the support of their institution.
- Paradkar introduces the concept of “trojan horse racism” by American author, attorney and Harvard alum, Fatimah Gilliam. This concept helps readers understand what is really behind the controversy; the accusations of antisemitism and plagiarism against Gay were just a racist tactic for her to resign.
- This opinion article raises the broader question of the real issue at hand, which is the attack on civil rights by people who benefit from racism and any form of marginalization.
- In that sense, Paradkar gives plenty of examples to illustrate this point.
- Moreover, in a media landscape dominated by poor coverage of the case of Doctor Gay, it is refreshing to read someone make a clear and compelling case in her defense.
