Toronto Star highlights plight of journalists in Gaza

At least 79 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, and yet the media has largely overlooked their colleagues working under Israeli siege. This op-ed is a firm statement that counteracts that unfortunate trend.

Please join us in applauding the Toronto Star for publishing an excellent op-ed by Michelle Shephard and Carol Off.

  • At least 79 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, and yet the media has largely overlooked their colleagues working under Israeli siege. This op-ed is a firm statement that counteracts that unfortunate trend.
  • The authors highlight the work of Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, who are investigating war crimes committed by Israel, specifically those that target journalists. Again, these types of investigations are often ignored by mainstream outlets.
  • An article focusing on the murder of journalists by Israeli military forces helps put pressure on others to report critically about Israel. Journalists must acknowledge that Israel is attacking the most basic principles of free expression in Gaza.
