MAP Alert: Globe and Mail’s One-Sided Reporting on Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

"Every mention of an Israeli death is stated in active voice and Hamas is named as the perpetrator, whereas Palestinian deaths are mentioned in passive voice without assigning blame to Israel."

Poor Coverage – Media outlet to be critiqued

Earlier this week, demonstrators occupied the Globe & Mail headquarters in protest of their slanted coverage of Israel's genocide of Palestinians. CJPME has sent countless letters to the paper demanding better coverage, but they continue to fall short. Their coverage of the latest ceasefire agreement is no exception to their anti-Palestinian track record.

Please help us pressure the paper while the iron is hot.

In solidarity,

(Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words):
The Globe and Mail’s article on the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is deeply one-sided and dehumanizes Palestinians in its reporting.

  • The article headline “Ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas draws mixed reactions from Canadian families” emphasizes “mixed reactions” without acknowledging the broader context of Israel’s 15-month war in Gaza, described as genocide by numerous human rights groups.
  • The opening paragraph frames Israel’s actions merely as “bombardments,” softening the fact they have committed acts of genocide, as concluded by Amnesty International.
  • The article describes a forthcoming exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian "prisoners," but provides no meaningful context. About 10,000 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli custody, including 3,376 held without charge or trial under administrative detention. This includes hundreds of children. Many Palestinian detainees are subject to torture.
  • The phrase "Palestinian prisoners” is itself misleading, as it obscures the arbitrary and unlawful nature of the detention many face. It is being reported in Israeli media that many of the Palestinians to be released from administrative detention in accordance with the ceasefire were arrested after October 7, 2023, but not found to have been involved in the Hamas operations, solidifying their status not as prisoners but Palestinian hostages held in Israel.
  • Every mention of an Israeli death is stated in active voice and Hamas is named as the perpetrator, whereas Palestinian deaths are mentioned in passive voice without assigning blame to Israel.
