Comments of the CJPME Media Researcher: (Note: Please do not copy and paste the material below as the content to your message to the media - put all comments in your own words): CBC Listen aired an episode featuring David Common in conversation with former ambassador to Israel, Jon Allen, about Israel’s genocide in the occupied Gaza Strip—but CBC refuses to describe it that way. The episode contains factual inaccuracies, erases Palestinian voices, and the host makes harmful comments about Palestinians in Gaza.
- The host opens by saying that the Israeli cabinet approved a plan for a new invasion of the occupied Gaza Strip, calling for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to “move” yet again to the south. But Palestinians are not moving—they are being forcibly expelled by Israel. The host uses soft language and omits the legal context that this amounts to ethnic cleansing and constitutes a war crime under international law.
- At 3:18, the host states, “You [Jon Allen] talked a bit about the humanitarian situation inside Gaza, Jon, but it’s hard to know because there are so few independent voices that exist within Gaza.” By implying that credible reporting cannot come from within Gaza, the host reinforces a colonial lens—one that privileges Western and Israeli narratives while discrediting and erasing Palestinian voices, even as they report on their own dispossession, bombardment, and genocide. Amnesty International recently called Gaza a "live streamed genocide," there are no shortage of independent voices showing the reality in Gaza. In doing so, the host echoes a long-standing media pattern that treats Palestinian testimony as inherently suspect or invisible unless filtered through so-called “independent and Western-approved” sources.
- At second 34, the host claims that “Israel had pulled back much of its army out of Gaza, why go now in such force?” This is factually inaccurate. Israel has maintained a deadly siege on the occupied Gaza Strip for over 60 days, with thousands of Palestinians facing imminent death from malnutrition and starvation. It has been over a year of violent, non-stop genocide. Far from withdrawing, Israel continues to launch daily airstrikes, systematically targeting schools, hospitals, tents, and refugee camps.
